6 Useful Nantucket Hotel Tips
1. When booking, call the Hotel, not the free 800 number.
800 numbers generally lead to centralized call centers that handle bookings for a number of different hotels, and they won't be able to negotiate, or even help you with the best pricing options. Pass on the reservations desk and ask for the Duty Manager or somebody else in authority. It is normally only they that are authorized to negotiate on rates.
2. Ignore their claims of "no rooms available".
Most hotels either retain some free rooms for emergencies or have a few that have simple faults such as bathroom tiles needing replaced or a cigarette burn having to be dealt with. Insist on a room, and inform the manager that you are prepared to accept a sub-standard room. This is very common, and most travelers know of this. Show the rest

Insist on a room, and inform the manager that you are prepared to accept a sub-standard room. This is very common, and most travelers know of this.
3. When looking for a room, book after 7 pm.
You will then get a good rate. By then the 6 pm arrivers have failed to turn up, and it is generally too late for regular bookings. Rather than not sell the room at all, the hotel will offer it at a reduced price - but you must request it. It will not be offered.
4. Make Sure that you tip properly.
If you tip the innkeeper when you first meet him or her, then that will stand you in good stead for your stay. If you give him a few dollars each day, you will get great service, and also - and this is a good tip wherever you stay - if you intend to return, give a good tip when you leave. You will then be remembered next time.
The same applies to the maids. Give them a dollar or two each day, and they will get to know you, and not only look after you but will know if somebody is trying to enter your room pretending they are you. This is not unknown to happen when maids are cleaning rooms.
5. Use the stuff left in hotel rooms.
If you have a computer and have left your internet lead at home, or have forgotten your power lead and charger or even your cell phone charger, check with the hotel because many people leave that kind of stuff behind. It is normally held in 'Lost and Found' and the hotel will normally allow you borrow it.
6. Be Hygienic.
When you first take occupancy of your room, run over the telephone and TV remote with a wipe. Carry one with you when you travel: these are the hot-spots for bacteria that few hotels think of sterilizing between guests. If there is a clock radio, also do that plus anything else you will have to touch that would not normally be regularly cleaned.
