Totally Nantucket August 29, 2008

This place is totally Nantucket. The patrons are dressed in casual blazers and there are always the older generation of Nantucket locals enjoying their meals. Of course, there are also the tourists but the place really spells local. I went there with a friend and we were surprised by the ambiance of the place. It was really comfortable and relaxed and definitely affluent. We expected nothing less than excellent service and we were not disappointed. We ordered wine from their good list and again were not disappointed. The sea bass was wonderful with the flavor all working perfectly together. My friend had the lobster which was good but not as good as the ones he had in Pearl. In other words, he was a little disappointed. The desert was gorgeous - I think there were blueberries there somewhere, but I didn't order it, my friend ordered it for me and it was a great choice. Well, that is something we truly enjoyed. All in all though, we were quite satisfied.

21 Federal continues to be one of the few restaurants on Nantucket that provides a predictably excellent experience. While the prices are a bit high, the service and food are topnotch. John at the bar is a real pro, so eating there is a pleasure. At times the bar can get crowded though with people waiting for tables. I'd recommend most any entree, though the halibut and striped bass are really good. Appetizers are good too. Wine is terrific (even the by-the-glass selections are much better than average); however, the mark-up on most wines is more than necessary. Desserts are a shortcoming -- I'd skip them entirely. All in all, one of the top 5 restaurants on the island, easily, and the most predictably good.

The presentation was great. Food was goo too. The service was not friendly and annoyed at any request we had made, like please refill our waters! The prices are extremely high.
