I learned two things about The Boarding House when I went there last summer. First, if you want peaceful dining, you should definitely go to the lower dining room and stay away from the bar upstairs. Second, if you want to party the night away, well, you should definitely check out the bar and stay there till late. That is when most of the people start coming and the place turns into a club and it gets really crazy.
Well, back to my experience… I was there with some friends and we wanted to simply have a good dinner without the trappings. So someone, I do not remember who, suggested that we can have one of the best foods in Nantucket at the Boarding House. So we went there expecting to have a fine meal. Well, to be honest, the food did not disappoint. The one who suggested the place knew what he was talking about, obviously. I have to say that their food is definitely four stars. The place is also relaxed and casual so we got what we wanted. As for the service, well, we can’t complain. The waitresses are friendly, polite and efficient.
Since we got there a little late already, soon enough we saw how the place turned into a crazy club. It just happened gradually and we just felt something had changed. Gone was our peaceful dining experience and we were caught up with the atmosphere. One of my friends checked out the bar upstairs. She came back reporting that upstairs the people are dancing on the tables. It was crazy. We decided to do the same and go party. Hell, we were there to enjoy so why not go with the flow.
The bar was overcrowded for one. The entire floor was a scene of a great night life. Even the bartenders are joining in with the crowd and having fun. There was a group of girls trying to dance on the bar, obviously they were drunk. Everybody was drunk. After a couple of drinks, we had to leave; it was just not our scene. It was too rowdy for us and we were past the stage of “college fun” so to speak.
We went back there again, but this time for lunch and we definitely enjoyed the food, which at the risk of sounding redundant, is simply superb.
I dined at 10 different restaurants this August; this was the worst service, hands down. I did not leave a tip (perhaps the second time I've done that in my life). The servers and buspeople were overwhelmed, and incompetent. A really awful experience. The food was fair at best, and the wine by the glass selections were awful. You can spend this amount of money at countless other places on the island, and have a better experience. I cannot recommend this restaurant.

Wow what a great experience June 08, 2008 Reviewer: Islandgirl
So last weekend we decided to have girls night out. Went to a movie and decided to have dinner at the Boarding House. What a nice surprise. The service was beyond great, food-superb, atmosphere-exactly what we were looking for, calm, relaxing with great interior design!
